Character Set-Up for Beginners

So you've gotten your character made, but don't know where to start? Don't worry, this simple guide is designed to walk you through the process of setting up. It is meant to explain the properties you can set on your character, what they do, and how to set them.

A character can have a lot of different properties on it, but there are three that can be considered the most important. These are your Description, Gender, and Species. While technically none of these are mandatory, they work together to help display basic information about your character to the world, and also interact with certain built-in muck systems in a couple of cases.

Also, any of these can be changed at any time! If you decide you want to mix it up, or you aren't oomfortable with what you have and want to change, go ahead!

Description

Your description is what people see when they 'look' at you, and is of course meant to be the primary way to show off who you are. There is, to my knowledge, no technical limit to how long a description can be, but some methods are easier than others, and the longer it is, the harder it may be to read. To set your description, you can use several methods. First, you may set a description on yourself by using the command

@desc me=TEXT

Where the TEXT is whatever your description is. By default, @desc permits only a single paragraph, but can accept certain linebreaks and command modifiers that can be used to alter this.

Example: @desc me=Zaphod's just this guy, you know?

Gender

This is used to show what gender you wish to display as. By default this is set to 'unassigned' and there is no requirement to set it. You can set it using the command:

@set me=sex:setting

Technically, you can set this to anything you like, but the following options are automatically understood by the system:

'unassigned' 'male' 'female' 'neuter' 'hermaphrodite' and 'herm'

Spindizzy also offers the option to set one's Pronouns to whatever you may want them to be. By default, these are set based on the settings under 'sex' above, but can be modified individually or even changed entirely if you so desire. This however requires specific editing of your character information and may need additional work. At present, instructions are available in "+read 13" and "+read 14".

Species

This is used to show what sort of critter you are. You can set this using the command:

@set me=species:setting

This can be anything you like. Cat, Fox, Three-Headed Monkey, be creative!

Finally, all of these can be set through the usage of a special program designed specifically for setting up your character, as well as other factors. This program is called 'editplayer' and instructions on how to use it are found HERE.

Ettiquette

By and large, what you call yourself, describe yourself as or otherwise identify as is not something anyone is likely to call you out on, but there are a few things that should be kept in mind:

1 - Any description you set should try to be public-friendly. What you look like in private is your own business, but if you're in public, your description should be PG13 at worst.

2 - Your description can be any length you wish it to be, but keep in mind that the longer it is, the harder it may be to read. Take a moment to read your own description after you've set it by looking at yourself, and check to see how large it is from the viewer's perspective.

3 - If you have used any nonstandard inputs, some automated commands may have trouble. This mostly happens in regards to pronouns.

If you ever experience trouble getting set up and need a hand, you can always ask a member of the 'helpstaff' for assistance.
