You feel a wrenching sensation...

Right on the edge of the disc is the Patashu Industries Base spaceport. Due to the unique geometry of Spindizzy, it's much more like a traditional airport than you'd expect - runways, landing pads and hangars extend right up to (and even into!) the void of space, the atmosphere and gravity meaning that ships can take off and leave straight into the 'space' beyond. Kobold crews and wheeled vehicles are busily moving around to pack and unpack aerospace vehicles moving between hangars and launches. Of course, not all the spaceships are pragmatic in design - others are sculpted like majestic and impressive robotic dragons, gryphons and other species. And for needs where directly lifting something into orbit is needed, the grandeous Space Elevator sticks straight up as far as you can see, even when you tilt your head back and squint, a towering needle that eventually ends in some kind of circular dome covering a small part of the sky like a moon.

Subject: Arctic Exoplanet Outpost Construction (Winter Olympics)
 
Spindizzy has come into contact with the planet Camanis, populated by a species of arctic fennec fox called Camanites. Despite the harsh conditions of their arctic wasteland of a planet, they've recently become spacefaring and established contact with us, seeking assistant with expanding their population off world. They've set their sights on the creatively named Camanis II, an even further out and colder planet. It has an atmosphere, brilliant auroras, blistering snowstorms, and is rumoured to have underground oceans kept thawed by geothermal activity - possibly even having life. They're interested in having outposts established that can handle space traffic and a skeleton crew of colonists, gather data about this new planet, and answer questions on what organisms and resources are here (if any) and if sustaining a greater population is reasonable in the future.
That's where you come in! You've been contracted to build these outposts, and the resources of Spindizzy are at your disposal - as well as your personal experience and creativity.
The event will take place Sunday 8th February 2026, 6:30 pm server time. The format is as follows: Pre-write up to three posts about the outpost you construct for the Camanites, how it's done and how the end result looks and functions. Any resources available on Spindizzy can be used to help in the construction (hiring from Feedback City, Patashu Industries, getting help from other Spindizzians, etc). Your outpost will be judged on whichever criteria you're aiming to maximize out of [practicality, aesthetics, innovation] and medals will be awarded to the winners.

Patashu claps claws! He's standing by Ms. Hojo where everyone is gathered. "So! welcome to the first medalled event of the 2026 Spindizzy Winter Olympics - Arctic Exoplanet Outpost Construction! This is a little bit different from what's been at previouslympics, but I like to always push the boundaries a little with each event I host. If you haven't finished your pre-writing yet, don't worry - you have until all participants have gone to write up what you're going to do slash have done."

BunnyHugger enters, with a nonanthro Eastern gray squirrel (Chitter) [Chitter(#5713XZ)] walking along next to her. 
( How do you build some decent, livable shelters for use on a harsh, though not uninhabitable planet? Well, Mako has some ideas, and like any good project, it starts with supply chains. We need Materials, and supplies. Step one: A montage, as Mako's ship, The Mooncat, slides into a port berth from the side of the image at Patashu Industries spaceport, and kobolds load up its hold with various tools, equipment, and sheets of plasteel and metal. Next, it pulls in from the side of the image in the water at the dockside of St Marin's and several supplies of crystal, wood, and fabrics are provided. Image three: The Mooncat somehow slides in from the side of the panel on concrete by a Supermarket and Pooka hop out to load up on foodstuffs and water. Then, the Mooncat then points itself at the stars and appears to elongate, as a series of rings begin to zero down in front of it, before it snaps forward like a slingshot through a hole in reality. The screen wipes sideways. )

PatchO'Black waves to Austin, BunnyHugger, and Chitter from the concessions stand.
( A ship swoops in from above, and comes to a rest on the ground in the snowy climes. The site chosen for this setup has been determined by dint of some orbital scanning, informed by the planetary brief she got; With heavy snowstorms, it is not to be set on or near a mountain due to avalanche risk. Instead she has selected a valley spot with good geothermal readings and the possibility of cave access. -IF- there are in fact underground lakes and life on the planet, it'd be easier to be underground, and by her reckoning, cave access makes it more likely to be reachable. A portion of the side of the wooden spaceship swings out like a drawbridge, and out march multiple short critters. Four rabbity creatures, three felynes, a tall maid, Mako herself, all wearing hard hats and encounter gear. They begin to assemble a shelter base, starting with foundations, then walls, then cieling, and begin spreading outward in a core-and-spokes design spreading off from the center. The structure is using a mixture of old fashioned plasteel that is known to be structurally sound, insulation to prevent heat loss, and magical warding to provide certain amenities one cannot get elsewhere. At one point. A Pooka looks at a large blueprint, turning it this way and that. Past him, a large segment appears to be wrong, somehow. Mako helpfully turns the blueprint so it is the correct way up. The Pooka looks at the plan, the base, and facepalms, before throwing the plan over a shoulder and marching off towards the segment. )

PatchO'Black mews, "Hi, Joyce! Thanks for coming to help me!"
Patashu takes notes, very practical, very self-sufficient...
( The base is built based on a kind of modular central core that has 'hooks' that additional rooms or pathways can be built onto.  Now, normally she might make this open concept, but with this weather? Probably best not.... The central 'core' is a large, vaguely hexagonal room that is made up of an outer ring pathway, an inner ring path with pillars, and an innermost square. From it extends exits to other segments. One appears to be designed as a communal living space. A largish room with cushions, screens, and a kitchen is present, with a table, and off of it are four smaller blocks that look to have two small bedrooms each - depending on design they can accommodate 8 (Single occupant)-16 (Double occupant) people, enough for a small but not too small crew. Each 'block' also has a small refresher unit. A second spoke leads to a small collection of rooms that have had a variety of testing devices placed in them. These appear to range from scientific devices to foraged item testing for safe consumption, and a small grow area for growing food and experimental plants. A third spoke leads to a warehouse facility for storage of goods, spare parts and tools. Mako directs this construction with the demeanor of someone who has done this before, almost. The facility has a mixture of technological support, as well as a touch of magical to help with cleanup and water. Her final action, before she declares the place ready - she plants a small seed in the middle of the atrium, and it slowly snakes upwards, growing into a small bur glittering crystalline tree that seems to almost lessen the weather effects around the area. Even if they have to move the base, the tree will provide a safe refuge for later AND a landmark. Overall, a structure built for functionality but not without some comfort - an unhappy crew is not a productive one, but not too fancy. After all, this place may not be permanent, nor may they find what they need here. The pooka apply a little squeaky-rubs to various amenities, and reboard the Mooncat. )
Patashu ooh, forward thinking, even. And always nice to see a crystal tree!
Patashu looks towards Ms. Hojo, who's stroking her chin in thought...
Durga says, "Oooh."
( Ms. Hojo looks interested! "Entirely unlike our sensibilities, but if it works as well as it looks, a welcome home away from home for us... Thank you, Mako. Your assistance will be remembered well. The tree you grew is sublimely pretty." )
Tss'Renia claps its hands from the spectator stands. "Woo, crystal tree!"
Mako returns to the viewing platforms. "If it needs to be, it can be expanded, but as is it should at least serve its purpose. :3

Frinexi claps paws with a soft chiming.
Patashu takes notes. "Alright, next up we have Durga, of Team Unnatural Monstrosities, when you're ready."
Durga says, "Oh! That's us!"

Durga waves everyone onto an observation ship!  She bows low and gestures inside when the representative Ms. Hojo approaches the ramp.  It takes off, and space outside quickly melts into a distorted rainbow.  "Ahem!  Howdy, critters.  Learning that y'all have rapid construction as a sport was an *unexpected delight*, my people have something of a history with building like this!  We were nomadic even way back when we were all on one planet, and we mostly travelled around fixing up after disasters.  The city-builders kept setting up right where the cyclones would hit, you see, so we got pretty good at it.  When it came time to set out for the stars, the Thistle Caravans became the Thistle Fleet, and we found that there's a lot more that needed building... Anyway, I'm just stalling for transit.  Look!  Over there!"  She points her fire-iron at a window as space calms down, and the ship approaches to land in the snow of a flat equatorial plain.

Three spacecraft, sent by the Thistle Fleet for rapid construction and flying in practiced formation.
 
Construction Barge "Ringshade"
By far the largest of the vessels, and only equipped with thrusters for station-keeping.  It's unadorned and utilitarian, a patchwork of blocky grey and gold ceramic, extensively rebuild and modified over the years starting from what must've been a truly venerable chemical-rocket launch vehicle.  It's a barely-mobile orbital drydock and construction yard, dominated by a bulky ring of enclosed workshop bays that swivels to aim for precision fabrication.
 
Engineering Ship "Exergonic Anointment"
The engineering vessel is compact and sturdy-looking; by virtue of being a thinking, spacefaring creature, it uses no room for crew and all its space for high-power reactors and support equipment.  It looks long and knife-like and serrated, with all of its engines bundled together in a bright cyan drive-block and all sorts of sensors and manipulators and emitters studded along a flat forward spar like a sawfish.  There are quite a few cannon turrets there, too, painted with warning colors like construction equipment rather than weapons.  Black patterns painted along its top resemble giant eyespots.
 
Support Liner "Treehouse"
The creatures of the Thistle Fleets spend much of their lives in spacecraft, and this crew-ship makes it clear that they put a lot of thought into the design of their homes.  It's bizarre and abstract and somewhere between organic and crystalline, made from swooping emerald-green sheets of material that glitter vibrantly in the light, enclosing large sections of empty space in its high-efficiency drive ducts.  Wide windows fit in well on its faceted surface, portholes into personal rooms or facilities or the substrate of society like cafes and art galleries.  Here, it's hosting hundreds of operators for the construction project.

<Verbatim start: Durga>
Three ships appear in orbit of Camanis II, growing and twisting out of bright points until they're fully-formed and ringed in the crackling actinic residue of their manifestation.  Exergonic Anointment -- the small support ship with an array of big guns -- is the first to move, rolling to aim its cannons retrograde, and firing waves of fragmenting projectiles at the surface.
 
They're only sensor probes: the first perform surface imaging, and disintegrate into mist and smoke before they touch the ground.  The next waves sink into the ice, scan the subsurface, and dissolve into rapidly-freezing water and trace elements of ephemeral circuitry.  Onboard the more crowded crew-ship, alien builders finish the last parts of their environmental impact assessment that couldn't be completed remotely. 
 
The exoplanetologist crew gives the fleet the go-ahead, and the construction barge Ringshade whirrs to life!  Its outer ring of bays swivels to open downward, the underside of those orbital construction and launch facilities falling open and revealing the hive of activity within.
 
The engineering ship fires two larger cannon-shells.  The first splashes through the snow and disappears, but the second freezes in place just above the surface and breaks into a flashing blue glow!  An explosive outrush of air blows the snow off the ice for a kilometer around, revealing the fine white lattice growing underneath it-- mechanical stabilization to condition the surface for heavy construction.  It stops near the borders of the new snowless circle with a dendritic fringe.
 
Creatures working in the orbital bays -- most of them small fuzzy insectoids piloting animal-like machines -- finish building modular structures in rapid succession.  The first to launch is the biggest thing visible in Ringshade's open compartments, it looks something like a folded radio mast on a bulky foundation.  It unmoors from its scaffolding, drifts out of place, then lights internal fusion-jets and rockets to the ground with several dragon-mechs precariously hanging on!
 
It turns upright and plunges straight down through the atmosphere, unperturbed by the shock of reentry and its own sudden deceleration.  The crystalline support grown into the ice holds up against the plume, and after its explosive entry, the mast sets down on its flat bottom surprisingly gently and unfolds.
 
Its blocky antenna elements open like slightly sad, scraggly tree branches, then light up, and a blue beam of light reaches up then expands into a hazy pillar that fills most of the construction site from surface to orbit... Ringshade empties the rest of its bays into the gravity chute, and folded prefab buildings placidly float to the surface.
 
They mostly resemble dense cylindrical blocks of machinery, without obvious doors or windows or other amenities.  Several of them stack up, unevenly arranged in three piles around the gravity-manipulating mast.  For a few minutes, a sparse river of glittering machines runs down from the sky.  As the last few land, Exergonic Anointment powers back up, radiator-surfaces along its sides glowing blindingly blue...
 
The engineering ship fires mass-streams into receivers atop the towers.  Pulsing rainbow beams arc from space to ice, and the blocky towers turn out to be only central mechanical pith-- as each module is struck, it suddenly grows gossamer extensions like a plant sprouting strange leaves!  Some of the towers grow into pragmatic habitation blocks, some form larger garages and hangars, and several domes and walkways stretch between the new buildings.  Etched gray landing and launchpads unroll across the ground near the tower.
 
The skeleton of this equatorial spaceport and residence is soon complete, and as the translucent membranous walls solidify into insulated polymer and aerogel, the dragon-rider aliens and other creatures launch a very strange moving operation: They descend, often without spacesuits, carrying furniture and tools and equipment down the gravity-chute.
 
Gravity-assisted space facilities will be useful for travel, but if this is to be the first place that spacefarers arrive and maybe stay, the builders seem intent on making it comfortable: They stock the rooms with slightly odd interpretations of Camanite furniture and other comforts, and fill the domes with gardens and parks resembling the more flourishing oases of their homeworld.  Creatures armored against the cold climb the outer walls, decorating the odd, bulbous structures with abstract murals vivid in comparison to the bright snow and ice.  The top levels of most of these towers are lightly decorated, left open with wide windows overlooking the ice, to be turned into public places or used for whatever else takes up a lot of space.
 
Perhaps disconcertingly, many of the utilities and infrastructure are more animate than usual, equipped with expert-systems and interactive manuals to enable the future inhabitants to maintain, expand, and modify the seed of a city.  By design, in decades or centuries this place will either be gone or unrecognizably changed, it won't remain precisely like this for long.  In the end, it resembles an icy anomaly, some twisting iridescent structure grown out of the frozen plain...

Frinexi stands tall and regal, every step precise. The dragon dances over the surface of the planet clockwise. Fore and hind-claws sketch the bounds of the facility in faceted curves forming sharp angles. Each structure a different expression of six-fold symmetry. Behind Frinexi dance smaller figures, living blueprints with bones of stress-strain tensors and logistical specifications for organs.
Frinexi turns and sings in unliving voice. The blueprints melt into the ice and anser in exuberant chorus. From living cold, shapes rise up, animate crystal refolding in harmonies of unbearable purity. The uncreatures that danced behind the dragon stand proud and huge, their living abstraction clothed in ice strong as steel.
( The world churns like living diamond as the interlocked crystals move -- balanced, fitted, and self-renewing in the cold. Secondary six-fold symmetries spread from the facilities, birthed in cold. No two exactly alike, they collide, shatter, and recombine to produce indoor gardens and breezeways, laboratories and classrooms, a chaos of factories and roads bordered with vines of ice and frost flowers. )

"How very beautiful. The future is brighter than we thought. It is like it emerged from the soul of the world itself. Thank you, Frinexi." )

Niny'ah arrives in the Long Growler with its belly full of modular base units, doing scouting sweeps until finding an area with a crescent of low but craggy mountains that break up the steady winds in the region to create a weather-shadow that leaves the snowpack thinner on top of the ice that makes up much of the subsurface terrain. With the location selected, the Growler comes to a hover, jets aimed out to the sides to try and avoid the exhaust heat flash-crusting the area right below the craft. The massive belly bay doors open, allowing a series of cargo crates to be dropped ten or so meters to the ground, air bags on the bottom puffing out to soften the landing. A series of explosive bolts break open the crates, and one reveals itself as a command center, deploying ice-crawler track units in Patashu Industries purple livery with a Smiling Kobold stencilled on the side. The crawlers lurch awake, and begin pushing the rest of the units into position.
( First up: the landing pad. Folded like an umbrella made of steel and clad in heat- and cryo-resistant nonskid material, it gets pushed out to a safe distance, and the spars start unfolding, left to work while the crawler units busy themselves with the next item: the Traffic Control Facility. bristling with radio whips and dishes, with a radome bubble on top, these are soon obscured by sturdy plastic to protect the equipment from razor-sharp blowing ice. Every structure gets secured with spikes driven deep into the snowpack at alternating angles to prevent them from just lifting out. The aesthetic is very practical: repurposed industrial cargo units dominate the design, all painted blaze-orange. Above it all, Niny'ah is monitoring the progress from the bridge of the Growler, presumably with Ms Hojo in attendance to supervise. She opens a video feed from one of the trackbolds as it enters the base and locates the master power panel, gripping the lever and sliding it over with a satisfying THUNK! Lights blink on across the top of the facility, previously-unseen blizzard-poles poking themselves up out of the ground between the base and the landing pad, and the pad itself clearing the snow from its surface with an ultrasonic squeal, inaudible from this distance. The pad lights blink on. )
( With the basics in place and the landing pad fully deployed and locked, the Growler lifts away from the surface, making way for orbital-drop cargo pods to ride fire down to the landing pad and then dismantle themselves with the aid of the Track-Kobolds, Engines turning into base heating units, control systems reclaimed into spares for the Track-Kobolds wiring harnesses, all standardized and modular. The base gradually grows, added modules extending and then curling back in a seemingly haphazard yet meticulously planned layout that folds in on itself to maximize contact between walls to conserve heat, valuable even with spaceage insulation. Above it all, Niny'ah is monitoring the progress from the bridge of the Growler, presumably with Ms Hojo in attendance to supervise. Finally, one unit drops its door to reveal a cryo-crawler scout vehicle, sized for the expected Camanis crew. )

Athares has opted to load a large PI freighter for this, the most pleasantly plump looking of dragon ships it is. He settles in, taking the helm himself; feeding back to Quodlibet, he shares his own eye's view, his thoughts narrating directly. "To the people of Camanis watching, first, it is an honor. Thank you for giving me the chance to lend a hand in such a historic endeavor." But, right to it. "Historic this is; Camanis is a new friend in the cosmos, so many conveniences we take for granted won't be available. Even if it's one planet over, this is a far frontier colony. First, location." He shows a scan of the planet surface. "Flat, higher surface temperature- higher odds of striking an underground sea. Shielded by mountains- the storms aren't -as- harsh. Ah- there." Cue him gently guiding the freighter in to set down gently on the flats, a large mountain nearby ringing around just under the northern aurorae, rainbow streamers curving around the far summit like a glowing crown. "We have large repulsors for landing ships, but the Camanites will need facilities for their own durable enough to support traditional thrusters, and mind, every gram of payload counts when you're using newtonian thrusters. We need to use materials on-site as much as we can." Cue sight of a large coil-heated vat being lowered along with a trio of tunnel-bore machines and several bins of simple sawdust. "No off-world metal, no off-world polymers, none of the expense to haul any of it. The only import is cellulose, the rest is already here." First, the TBM rigs are sent off to nearby crag to dredge up some stone. "Calcium-rich regolith can be made into a cement for astro-crete, available at any standard of spacefaring technology. This will be suitable for a launch and landing pad." Ground stone selected, water melted in the vat and added in, the 'crete is mixed and poured once a circle has been cut out for it. Fixed nearby is another melter with a gantry pipe. "Now a nuclear-thermal cargo rocket can land and refill just from snow-pack."

Athares starts having kobolds and robot drones set out a row of vats. Snow and more snow goes in, a careful mix of sawdust added too. "Astro-crete is needed for the sturdiest structures, but any walls that don't have to handle much heat can be made of pykrete. It's literally just water and sawdust and it's about half as strong as regular concrete- but less than half of the weight, so you can still build with it just like concrete. Only it's much easier to fix. All you need is water..." And it's poured much like concrete, a cluster of melting and casting machines set up around a series of industrial, trapezoidal-looking buildings on one end, cast-slabs assembled into a large geodesic- wait. Yes, it's meant to look like a giant igloo a bit uphill from this nascent industrial park. Seems he's got a residential zone in mind with a seamless blend of space-dome and arctic-igloo aesthetic up there. "Given Camanites are cold-weather people, you should be comfortable at temperatures where the pykrete is still nice and sturdy. At first, you'll have a generous supply of imported cellulose. For future expansion..." Inside the dome, a large packed set of hydro-trays are set out. A few are swimming-pool sized. "An indoor tree farm with the option to pack in actual soil once you get underway. But that'll take heat and power." Back to the industrial section, the selection of RTGs are strung along the back in an array, but there's also a set of large stirling engines by what looks like a large oil rig. "RTGs are to deep-space power as the bow and arrow is to hunting. There might be flashier options, but these will never go away because they always work and aren't fussy. The piston engine though? It's a generator you can fix with only basic shop tools and run on any heat source- such as the geothermal heat underground. The isotopes will carry you long enough to drill for water and heat, then-" Cue sight of a pile of pipes set up by the rig. "-these conduits and heat pipes will bring you your first mining site, possibly of many."
Athares pans out from the sight of shop tools and fab, porta-foundry and starter materials set up under a dome, switching to his own eye-view settled back in the seat. "So now you have everything you need to build, prospect, and mine using only basic kit and your new world around you. I won't lie, it'll be long hard days at first, but sooner or later, you'll need to kick your feet up, grab a meal, and have some fun." First, aside that tree farm are an assortment of hydro kit and a PI basic food-chem kit. "The algae-vat will provide emergency rations in a pinch, but that's not anything to live on. Handily Quodlibet has a number of food synthesizers that can be reproduced with relatively simple fabricators and bioreactors to make 'lab' food, that'll start you off while you're waiting for your first crop to grow. These are adaptable; clear crystal ice can serve as windows to let in sunlight both for native Camanite crops and your viewing pleasure. You're building with pykrete, cheap and local; you don't have to build small. You'll have room for gardens, kitchens, a brewery if you wish." He smiles. "You'll miss your food and drink from home, but only for a while. Then you'll have colonial crops to invent new colonial cuisine, no shipments required. And if there's life under the ice? If someone's daring, maybe you'll find out if they're edible." Next cue a shot outside. "Fishing for science, food, or fun is one passtime. You all have a skiing and snowboarding culture too; you're near enough the slopes to indulge. It's a frontier colony for the outdoors type; there's still plenty of flats you could clear to make courts for your favorite sports, water vats providing plenty of excess if you want to build ice sculptures, or a skate park. Snowmobiling? Electrolysis for hydrogen fuel; the mountains beckon. You might even try-" He shows a sea of snow in a valley nearby, wind constantly blasting through. "Sand-sailing, snow edition. Or paraglide off the slopes. Sally forth, adventure. That's why you're there, right?"
Vahno says, "...Wow."
Athares, done, will show one last shot before bringing that ship back home. "I know, it's rustic to say the least but the point is making sure that no matter what happens, your people will -always- have a place to call home... Again, thank you."

Santa Claus has taken the season off sick, but the snow and festivities must go on! That's where you come in. Subbing in for Spindizzy's Snow Miser, you'll be petitioned by Mrs. Claus to make a snowstorm. Of course, no musical is complete without a song and dance entry... Or will things go as planned?
 
This is, of course, inspired by a scene in The Year Without a Santa Claus [1974] by Rankin/Bass Productions ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEbFfoBPfw4 ), as well as the copious icesnort 'Smiser' riffs on the scene that subvert expectations in a variety of YTP styles, music videos and cross-references, which you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/@icesnort/videos
 
The event will take place Sunday 15th February 2026, 6:30 pm server time. The format is as follows: Pre-write up to three posts (or any equivalant amount of text) about your performance as Spindizzy's Snow Miser. You can play it straight or subvert it in any way you desire, from the conventional to the avant garde. Your performance will be judged on whichever criteria you're aiming to maximize out of [comedy, musical performance] and medals will be awarded to the winners.
