A floating disk, divided into pie wedges, with every colour of the rainbow taking its turn in each spot, approaches you. You step on, and are carried away... by the time you're able to hop off, you find yourself in

A large room with upturned dice. A number of rats sit in the corner, having tea and talking about disconnected things. The chandelier sits akilter, that is, askew, and a large book rests to the left, filled with words that randomly jump out of the page. Directly in front is a soft dice cup, ready for shaking and games to begin. The surrounding walls are a single color but fixed with architectural lines, not leaving a place for the eye to rest.

Would it be a SpinDizzy Olympics without a Boggle tournament? We need not worry, because Thursday the 19th at 7 pm muck time (Pacific) we'll have one. It's to be at the Cash Creek Casino --- luge N2 W2, sw, c, b --- and run for as many rounds as can be done in two hours.

The objective of Boggle is to find as many words as you can in a small board with assorted tiles. Each tile contains 1 letter, and you can connect the letters in any direction (up, down, diagonal) to form words. As long as the next tile in the word is adjacent to that tile, you can continue the word. However, you cannot use the same tile twice in a word! You also cannot cross-over the edge of the board and back on again.

Austin says, "Excellent! So, the basics of Boggle. Each round will begin with a random shuffle that produces a grid of 16 randomly chosen letters."
Niny'ah is still semi-zooted from fatigue
Austin says, "Your goal is to make words out of the letters, starting from any point and, using each letter at most once, tracing out a path to the left, right, up, down, or diagonally to the next letter."
Austin says, "You get points for words of three or more letters, with a bonus awarded for words five or more letters long."
Mitsuki bounces in place!
Athares looks to the rules. "It says the letters can be connected in any direction. Does this direction have to be constant for the whole word?"
Austin says, "You do _not_ get points for words that any other person has found, however!"
You rumble, "Athares: No"
Athares ahs, "So it doesn't."
Austin says, "No, you can change direction each letter. You can't re-use a letter, but you can tangle up as much as you like."
You rumble, "What you CAN'T do is reuse the same letter twice (I think?)"
Mako says, "Nope! You could theoretically use all sixteen letters if you can make a contiguous non-crossing line for it."

Austin says, "If you believe an opponent has found an illegitimate word, you can challenge it. If the word is not in the dictionary, they lose the points for that non-word."
BunnyHugger says, "This game always ticks me off because I think of myself as having a big vocabulary and then I always perform poorly at this."
BunnyHugger says, "But like Sisyphus, here I am."
Austin says, "*However*, if the word *is* in the dictionary, then the *challenger* loses those points. So you are encouraged to challenge wisely."
Austin says, "After each round I will offer a short while for challenges, but it won't go on forever."

Austin says, "When the round starts you will have three minutes to list words, and you do that by looking at the board and just typing out words that you see. You don't need to prefix them with a quote mark or a command or anything."
Athares nods, listening.
Austin says, "Your three minutes start from the moment *you* first look at the board, so you don't have to rush in a frenzy after I shake the board, except to get as many rounds in as possible by the 9 pm Muck Time close. At the end of whatever round we're playing at that hour we'll declare the winners based on total points accumulated."
Athares says, "Curious that the game has its own dictionary instead of using a standard one for the language."
Austin says, "And an important consideration: the letter Q can appear. Our house rule is that you can consider this to be either a Q or a QU, depending on what makes your word-finding easier. This is at variance with the official Boggle rules but those who were with us when we did a tournament a couple months back remember, sometimes you get a board that's nothing but letters Q so we need *some* breaks."
